I bet you're all thinking, "Whoah what the hell is this post going to be about?" Well.....sit back and read.
I'm one of those people that likes to have background noise most of the time. It's difficult for me to just sit on my sofa and be on the internet without music on in the background or an episode of Seinfeld for distraction. I think it's a habit I have developed from living on my own. Having said that it's rare that I just sit there and watch TV and do nothing else, I'm usually multitasking, but as a result of this habit I do end up watching more TV than I like to admit.
When I go to bed at night I'm often too tired to read and I will watch some TV until I get really sleepy. Similarly, in the morning, I'll flip the TV and watch the news or what not while I'm waking up.
But the regular TV shows are kind of getting boring in my opinion. In fact, it's been years since I've tuned into a channel below 20.
Recently, I've explored two new channels: The History Channel and Discovery. While exploring this new TV territory, I've woken up while watching the following:
Ancient Weather
The episode I watched was about the Maya Civilization and their collapse during the 8th and 9th century. The show said that there are new theories that this happened due to 200 years of drought. It was super interesting to watch how the drought drove them to do crazy things including human sacrifice to the Gods in hopes that the rain would return. Quite fascinating! Picture me lying there all squinty eyed, only one eye open really, bed hair watching this and saying "oh isn't that something."
How it's Made
This is a great show, but this morning I saw how hot dogs were made. I wish I could take that back. I didn't need to see pureed meat like that. It burned my eyes! Having said that, I find this show super endearing. It is one of the few shows out there that has such a simple concept and simple way of filming with a narrator (very a la Mr. Rogers). And usually, the companies they follow are little Canadian businesses. Very cool. Again, pan your imagination back to me all squinty eyed and learning about hot dog tubes. Indeed!
I've also watched a few episodes of Pawn Stars. Another gem! Kind of like a more up-to-date Antiques Roadshow. Have you seen it?
Anyways, I feel like guys would be impressed with my latest viewing choices. And I kind of get why they like this stuff!
I may not be eating a hot dog for awhile though. If you want to see for yourself here is the video - although its the EXACT same video, it's a guy narrator instead of the girl. And the dialogue is identical! Weird!

There are some really great background shows on channels above 20, you're right. However, I get the most minimal cable package so I never see them.
As a result, I can't remember the last time I turned on my TV.
However, due to this post I wonder if I should upgrade my cable... Or even cancel it since I don't use what I have. Hmmmm....
Oh no - i can't believe they did a segment on hot dogs - oh....i'm watching the ground up meet go through the other grinder as i'm typing this....yeah no hot dogs for me for a-woah - what was THAT?! Is that the meat turned into a smooth sauce?? ACK!!!! what the hell?? HOW DO THEY GET MEAT TO DO THAT?!
All right this has ruined Kraft Dinner and weiners forever.
I go to sleep to a late night such as Letterman or Leno and its NPR radio for me in the morning. I was chuckling at you never watching anything below 20.
I watch How It's Made all the time, its great. I haven't seen the hot dog segment yet though, but I'm pretty sure I would still eat hot dogs. I have a fairly high tolerance when it comes to knowing where food comes from. I think it has a lot to do with spending a lot of time on farms.
I recently discovered I have the National Geographic channel, so I have been watching a lot of that.
As for going below 20, The Weather Channel is 18, so I guess I am below 20 a lot.
i have to say that i was most disturbed by the ground mustard.
chantoon.
I TOTALLY do this too with the background noise...but I dont have cable or anything (my landlord cut the cable thankfully becuase I was starting to watch TOO MUCH cake boss and say yes to the dress...but I digress)....
I have movies or music going constantly in the house. Im with you, background noise is a must.
The title of this post made me laugh! And then EWE, that mashed up nasty mousse (did I spell that correctly?) like mess made me want to vomit, EWE!!!
Merry Christmas, Rawbean! I dig Discovery, History, and Travel channel. But my favorite thing to do is put on a political documentary from my Netflix queue and drift into sleep.
I'm in support of background noise...it's probably not a good habit to teach Bella, but I either have music playing or the tv on.
And speaking of Discovery, you and Victor would be tv buddies :). He loves "How It's Made" and "Pawn Stars" and tries to get me to watch them (saying that at least I'll learn something...vs. Real Housewives where I'll learn nothing). He also watches the Weather Channel. I call his shows "snore shows" but secretly, I like watching some of them :)
