For some reason this little story popped in to my head today and now I am sharing it with you....yes, lucky you.
Back in university my part time job was working in the water testing department at a pool and spa store. It was a great job because they were super busy in the summer when a student needs a lot of work, and then they would slow down in the winter (I still worked Saturdays). My boss was a nice guy, but relatively conservative. He was a short-ish man with a big booming voice and he was definitely in business to make money.
Every Saturday morning the water testing team would meet to talk about sales, promotions and any issues we had. Each year we had a variety of sales and one in particular sticks in my head. It was a sale on an automatic pool cleaner called the "Kreepy Krauly." Basically the contraption connects to the pool's pump and filter and uses the water flow from the pump to coast along the bottom of the pool cleaning it automatically.
The Kreepy Krauly was not cheap so when it went on sale, we wanted to make sure all of our customers knew about it. My boss suggested we put a catchy slogan up on the sign outside. The sign was one of those ones on a tall pole that sat happily on the side of a busy street.
We all sat there for a moment.
And then I said "Kreepy for Cheapy?" in a very, very enthusiastic voice.
My boss paused and then said "Let's DO IT." (I picture him pounding his fist on the table, but I'm not sure that this happened).
Honestly, I was so excited. This slogan was totally outside his comfort zone but he went for it. I remember the guy who had to change the letters was like "interesting" when we told him what to put up there.
I STILL chuckle to myself when I think of that slogan. I think I was giddy the whole time it was up there on the sign.
Side note: the above photo is a recreation by rawbean and is not an actual image of the sign discussed in this story.

I remember it! SO awesome! I also remember singing theme songs for *everything*. Was a fun summer job!
Hee, hee. Fun story. Did it generate a lot of sales?
Oh God that is the BEST slogan EVER! I know those things - my aunt had a pool and had one. I was scared of it.
LOL Too funny. Did it generate more sales? Did random people come in and ask what the heck does that sign mean? (I would be someone who would have no idea?)
This post reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite. Rawbean Dynamite! I like that.
That sign would bring me into the store for sure, just to see what the heck was going on in there LOL!
hahaa totally forgot about that... so you, so gold.
chantoon.
I first thought that this was billboard for some strange dude's services. Anyway, your story is pure gold. I would have liked to have witnessed that moment.
THAT Is hilarious - So fun, and creative.
ALthough, I have to admit, that my neighbors have one of those kreepys...and it lives up to its name. its like a little monster in the pool...
